Objective and overview

MASTER DEGREE (LAUREA MAGISTRALIS) IN

MEDICINE AND SURGERY “HARVEY”

Introduction

On October 1st 2009 the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery will inaugurate a new 6-year degree course in Medicine and Surgery taught entirely in English. The course is open for both Italian and international students. The degree course has been named after William Harvey (1578-1657) to emphasize the high international standing of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

The challenge of delivering an entire course in English (the international scientific language) is coherent with the will to continuously develop and update the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Pavia - a policy initiated more than two centuries ago.

Qualifying Educational Objectives of the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery

Graduates of the degree course in Medicine and Surgery will be provided with a strong scientific background and theoretical and practical preparation in medical practice and methodologies necessary for lifelong learning, as well as a high level of professional decisional and operational independence. The training is characterized by a holistic approach to health problems in relation to their surrounding chemical-physical, biological and social environment.

The course consists of a total of 360 ECTS (European Transfer Credit Transfer System), divided into six years, of which at least 60 have to be acquired in training activities aimed at developing specific professional skills. Each credit corresponds to 8 hours of teaching. In case of practice or laboratory activity each credit corresponds to 14 hours, while a training credit is equivalent to 20 hours of work.  A total of 36 exams have to be passed with a final discussion of a thesis.

The students will acquire the essential theoretical knowledge that derives from basic sciences, with a view to their subsequent professional application. The students will develop an ability to identify and critically assess from a clinical point of view, and with a unitary vision, extended also to the socio-cultural aspects and typology, the data on the state of health and illness of individuals, interpreting them in light of the basic scientific knowledge of pathophysiology and organ and apparatus diseases. Furthermore, the acquisition of skills and experience, combined with the ability of self-assessment, the ability to face and solve the main health problems from the preventive, diagnostic, prognostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation point of view and the knowledge of historic, epistemological and ethical issues in medicine will also be emphasized, as well as the ability to communicate clearly and humanely with the patient and the family. Also, the ability to collaborate with different health care professionals, the ability to apply the principles of health economics in medical decisions, and the ability to recognize health problems and make responsible decisions will be highlighted.

The specific expertise in the field of internal medicine, general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, as well as medical and surgical specialties, will be acquired by carrying out professional training for a minimum of 60 credits. It will be accomplished along with other training course activities at the university healthcare facilities.

Healthcare facilities in Pavia

For research, teaching and training purposes, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pavia makes use of the high concentration of health clinics in Pavia, some of which are very well-known at national and international levels.

In particular, the San Matteo Hospital, now San Matteo Foundation (IRCCS), founded centuries ago, is internationally acknowledged for its excellence in many fields such as cardiosurgery (world record in heart transplants), haematology, and infectious diseases. Two other hospitals are located close to San Matteo: the Neuroscience Hospital Foundation “C. Mondino” (IRCCS) and the Occupational Medicine Hospital Foundation “S. Maugeri” (IRCCS), both internationally renowned.

Moreover, the National Center for Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO) with a proton-synchrotron and three treatment rooms for radiotherapy employing protons and ion beams have been recently opened near the three hospitals mentioned above. This center with technology that delivers state-of-the-art radiotherapy is expected to evolve into a major reference point in world hadrontherapy, alongside similar centers under construction in Germany, France, and Austria in addition to those already operating in Japan and the USA. A panoramic view of the aforementioned health care facilities can be seen in the photo taken from the roof of new building of the San Matteo Hospital.  The Alps can be seen in the background.
